What to buy, from whom, through which agent, under a ceiling
General advice on picking a product, a seller and an agent, built from what we actually ran into while choosing the 42 finds on this site on October 24, 2026.
Read the option menu before the headline price
How to choose a product on 1688 or Taobao starts with one habit: ignore the big price at the top until you have opened the option menu. The headline is almost always the cheapest option. Six of our finds show how wide the spread can be on a single page.
- The shell jacket: ¥79 for the shell, ¥125 with a fleece liner, ¥225 with a down liner.
- The straight-leg jeans: ¥16.80 for the plain grade, ¥32 and ¥35 for the two stretch grades.
- The leather belt: ¥7.50 to ¥18.70, depending on hide and buckle.
Option menus also hide things that are not options. The "colour" of the card reader is its packing; the "colour" of the joggers decides the leg; every colour of the small watch says "watch only". Read each option name in full.
Then read the spec lines against the title. Our dress is chiffon in the title and knit fabric in the specs. The long cardigan is sold as wool and lists acrylic first. The camel coat is sold as cashmere-wool with 20 per cent polyester. None of that is a reason not to buy; all of it is a reason to ask the seller before you pay.

Batch sizes and the smallest order
1688 is a wholesale market. Its first price tier starts at a quantity, and the seller will not sell below it. The tier is printed next to the price, but agent pages and finds lists often show only the price, so the quantity is a surprise at checkout.
We priced every find at its smallest order for that reason, and we kept some batch buys on purpose because they teach the point: a blank hoodie that sits on the top floor only because it comes in fives, a canvas tote that sits on the second floor only because it comes in threes. We dropped listings whose first tier started at a hundred pieces or more, including a pair of jeans at 150 and a scent at 5,000.
One more thing about tiers: the next tier can be close. The small steel watch drops from ¥72.22 to ¥61.11 at two pieces, so two cost ¥122.22 instead of ¥144.44. If a friend wants the same thing, a batch can be a saving rather than a trap.

Sellers and the costs they shift onto you
How to choose a seller, when the same thing is listed by many: look past the price to what the seller adds to your bill and how likely the listing is to still be there when your agent buys.
- Postage to the warehouse. On our finds it ran from nothing to ¥10 per order. On a ground-floor item, ¥10 can be more than the goods.
- Starting quantity. Two listings of the same tee can start at one and at two.
- Stock. Some of our picks were thin when we read them: titanium polygon frame (one left), leather hiking boots (five pairs), grey wool coat (six), cloth sport shoes (seven pairs), floral puff-sleeve dress (seven). Low stock is fine; just check it before you pay.
- Sales. Listings with steady monthly sales, such as the nylon tote at about 400 or the short down jacket at over 700, are less likely to vanish or change under you.
- Honest labels. A seller whose title, options and spec lines agree is easier to deal with when something goes wrong.
Pandagoo's archived order page warned about the same thing for Weidian and secondhand listings: confirm price, quantity and carriage first, or the agent may find it cannot buy the item at all.
Seller changes after you order show up as a price difference to pay, which is one more reason not to plan a ceiling to the cent.
Handing a capped sum to an agent
How to choose an agent you can trust matters more when the budget is fixed, because a lost balance is a lost budget. Five checks, applied to Pandagoo as an example:
- Fee numbers before you pay. The archived checkout had lines for the handling fee, the fixed handling fee and the amount payable. An agent that shows the numbers there is one you can plan with.
- Top up only what one order needs. Archived top-ups ran from ¥10 to ¥5,000. Use the low end.
- The site answers today. Pandagoo's did not on October 24, 2026.
- Money comes back as money. Archived refunds came back as account balance, at most 12 days after the seller said yes, and the pages had a balance withdrawal screen. Check that both paths work before you deposit.
- A name behind it. The archived About text was a template. Prefer an agent with a company you can look up.

Slip-ups from our own picking sessions
Before you buy, here are the mistakes we nearly made or watched for while choosing these finds. Each one would have broken a budget.
- Trusting the English size chart. One jacket listing translated the Chinese weight unit jin as pounds. A jin is half a kilo; a pound is less.
- Missing the hidden batch. A tee we liked started at two; a belt we liked started at ten; a perfume we looked at started at 5,000.
- Mistaking a model number for a style. Several speakers, headphones and watches carried other companies' model names or copied famous designs. We left every one of them out, and you should read titles for the same thing.
- Ignoring stock zero. A brass-buckle belt looked perfect and had no stock at all.
- Forgetting the freight line. A speaker with a battery or a bottle of scent can push a whole parcel onto a dearer line.
